The history of Feng Yi Dumplings dates back to the 1970s. The story began when Madam Teoh Siew Hong or better known as Feng Yi or Aunty Hong Yi in Hokkien–began her humble beginnings as kuih maker like many others around her. Her determination, perseverance, sweat and toil despite the small profits back then brought her to where she is today.
According to Aunty Hong Yi, her purpose in life was simple and that is to take good care of everyone. As long as there was enough food on the table for the family, Aunty Hong Yi was much grateful.
Her sweat and toil has allowed us much luxury–enabling us the enjoyment of such fine and delicious creations, the trademark Feng Yi Bak Chang (dumplings in Hokkien). For many of us who are not familiar, Bak Chang is a traditional Chinese food and is also commonly known as Glutinous Rice Dumplings and sometimes as Sticky Rice Dumplings. In Mandarin, it is called Zhong Zi.
Passionate in taking Feng Yi Dumpling's legacy to the next level, Aunty Hong Yi's family continues with the hard work to meet the ever increasing demand coming from all over the country and neighbouring countries. Adapting technological advancements in their business, Feng Yi today is now able to produce thousands of Bak Chang each day. One of the innovations undertaken is the vacuum wrapping of the freshly steamed Bak Chang enabling longer distance delivery while preserving the authenticity of the taste, fragrance and texture.
At Feng Yi, all our Bak Changs are hand wrapped by well-trained and skillfull workers. The perfection in the wrappings helps significantly in turning out delicious rice dumplings. Every single piece of materials used from the ingredients to the bamboo leave wrappings are carefully selected to maintain the highest quality and the processes closely controlled and monitored. Compromise in quality is never an option at Feng Yi.
The authenticity of our Bak Chang is evident by the frequent inquiries we receive everyday. Served steaming hot, it is simply irresistible and mouth watering. It may not be possible to consume too many at one go, but the thought of sharing the savour bites.
